On the National Registry for Historic Landmarks, 1886

Horace Aaron Weller came to Fort Bragg to manage the Company Store, and built a one and a half story Victorian in 1886. In 1897, he  added a second and third floor, making extensive use of beautiful redwood and fir paneling throughout the house, bringing the house to its present size of 10,000 square feet.

The main floor had ten rooms with a large entrance hall, comprising several paneled eating rooms, a study, parlor, music room, kitchen, pantry room, game room and office. Two seat benches and a redwood gothic arch enhance the hall and staircase, and there are three distinctive fireplaces. Four large bedrooms, together with a hall, bathroom and a three room attic complete the second floor. The master bedrooms were joined together by a connecting wash room with the original marble sink. The bathroom has an unusual enameled elephant-trunk pull toilet.

A stairway leads to the spectacular third floor ballroom,900 feet square with 15 foot ceilings. The ceilings and walls are paneled in polished old growth redwood. A rare curly redwood mantel also enhances this beautiful room. The hall has phenomenal acoustics, and was used as the Baptist meeting hall and Sunday school, until a 'real' church was built.   The hand-forged bronze chandelier was designed for the space by Coe Studios in 2009. 

When Mr. Weller died in 1929, the ballroom became "a real party place"; the huge hidden storage spaces along the perimetera of the hall may have come in very handy during prohibition ...

1935 - 2013 History of Three Generations!

THE PAINTER HOUSE

Built in 1935, 656 Boulevard Way has been known as the Painter House.  In the 1930’s and 40’s, Alton C. Painter, his wife Vera, and their 16-year-old son, Jack, lived in this charming Mediterranean.  The Painter family loved to stroll down Lakeshore, patronizing the nearby stores and restaurants.  In the 1940’s Alton and Vera invited servicemen and women back to the house to share home cooked meals and good company while son Jack was in Europe during World War 11.  Friendliness abounded here.

Alton, who had previously worked as an advertising artist in New York, was welcomed into a group of esteemed artists in Oakland known as the Thirteen Watercolorists.  His paintings appeared in several Bay Area exhibits and his artwork is listed in the collections of California Artists.

A legacy of art and creativity is in the family vein.  Alton and Jack both worked in San Francisco for Patterson and Hall Creative Group.  Jack was often the model for his father’s drawings and illustrations.  The two were also fun loving musicians, a talent passed on to their children and grandchildren.  The Painter Family often shared the happiest of times at 656 Boulevard Way playing music and singing!

After Alton’s death in 1948, Vera welcomed her son’s family into the home.  Dorothy and Jack raised all three children at 656 Boulevard Way, who in turn had three grandchildren. 

Creativity extended to Dorothy who was a prolific seamstress.  She made countless baby quilts for children born to both family and friends.  Although Dorothy was a bookkeeper for over 30 years, sewing remained her art.

Just like Alton and Vera, Jack and Dorothy entertained during their years at 656 Boulevard Way, sharing backyard barbeques and holiday dinners with neighbors and friends.  Jack was quite a chef and was always ready for a fun time.  He loved to tap dance his way into a room! 

Jack Painter passed away in 1990 at the age of 70 and Dorothy in 2013.  Mrs. Painter’s life in the home she called the “best looking house on the block” spanned from 19 to 88 years of age. 

The Painter House has been a legacy of good times.  It is the hope of the family that the next generation to own this house experience similar joy, love, and success that graced the Painter Family for so many years.
